A workshop held in London to discuss opportunities for technology and innovation in the marine industries was hailed a great success. Called to give the UK marine industries and academia an introduction to the nine technology themes in its first technology roadmap, nearly 80 delegates attended the event. The workshop was held under the auspices of the Technology Strategy Board’s recently formed Transport KTN and the MILC was grateful for its support.
The themes reflect technologies and innovations that will help UK marine industries address environmental, demographic, and other future market changes.
“There was intense discussion in all the breakout groups and the majority of attendees agreed to continue the exchanges by participating in their chosen theme working groups in the coming weeks” said John Murray, Co-chair of the MILC Technology and Innovation Group. “We organised this workshop to encourage wider industry engagement and that has certainly been achieved”, added John.
The Technology Strategy Board provided the facilitation for the discussion as part of its support for the newly formed Knowledge Transfer Network (TKTN) for Transport. Nick Bromley, Interim Director for the KTN commented: “Most of the concepts discussed clearly identified the opportunities for the automotive, rail and marine sectors to share their technology requirements. I’m delighted the workshop clearly demonstrated the value of knowledge sharing and how this type of engagement event can create sector crossover and lead to new business”.
The MILC Technology and Innovation Group is one of four Working Groups of the Marine Industries Leadership Council which aims to build and maintain the UK’s lead against global competition in the naval, commercial, leisure and marine renewable sectors. The other working groups are concerned with people & skills, environment & regulation and international trade.
