ENVIRONMENTAL CODE OF PRACTICE
Managing hazardous materials
In order to avoid potential incidents, you should prepare to
handle hazardous materials carefully. The agencies recommend that
the following reasonable precautions be undertaken to avoid the
possibility of such an incident:
- Keep an inventory of the types and quantities of chemicals and
their location readily available
- Ensure chemicals are suitably labelled
- Prepare contingency plans
- Many pollution incidents occur as a result of poor security –
protect your site from vandalism and theft
- Remember to contact your sewerage undertaker if any hazardous
materials are accidentally discharged into the foul water drainage
network
- Where possible consider using an alternative, safer and less
environmentally damaging chemical in your process
- Do not pour any used or contaminated chemicals onto the ground.
They will soak into the ground, contaminating the soil and
underground water supplies
