ENVIRONMENTAL CODE OF PRACTICE
Resource Efficiency
Overview
All marine businesses have some form of office,
administrative or reception facility where ‘paperwork’ is dealt
with. The operation of this office facility with the use of
associated equipment and stationery, as well as other sectors of
the business, has environmental implications. However, it is often
easiest to make a significant difference to practices here, with
relatively little effort and cost that may result in cost savings.
You should select the advice that is applicable and practical for
your particular business. As with many environmental improvements,
there is an emphasis on increasing efficiency and minimising the
resources, which your company uses, and the wastes which it
produces. Increasing efficiency makes economic as well as
environmental sense and provides an opportunity for you to improve
the competitiveness of your company.
The BMF are committed to leading by example and have achieved
certification to the BS8555 standard for Environmental Management
Systems. Simple actions such as those listed in the action
tables (energy, waste and resource efficiency) have resulted in
positive results using fewer resources and saving money.
Some general issues to be considered as part of an Environmental
Management System are:
Exclusive Service to BMF Members
The BMF have developed an exclusive service for their members,
helping marine business develop their own in-house Environment
Management System. Following certification to Phase 5 of the
BS 8555
Environment Management System standard, members of the BMF can
gain access to templates and further guidance used at Marine
House.
This guidance will not provde businesses with a third party
certification, however it will provide them with a standard which
demonstrates effective management of their business and the
environment.
