ENVIRONMENTAL CODE OF PRACTICE
Pollution Prevention
Some marine businesses, by the very nature of their operations,
will be at greater risk of being involved in a pollution incident.
Good site management and proper equipment maintenance will go a
long way towards preventing pollution incidents, but some specific
things to look out for are:
- Ensure you have bunds around any oil storage tanks to prevent
contamination of watercourses
- Colour code sewers, storm drains and soakaways. The Environment
Agency recommends painting surface water drains in blue and foul
water drains in red. Let staff and customers know what different
colours mean to avoid accidental discharges. Colour code your
drainage plans in the same way.
- Prevent particles of old antifouling or other debris from boat
maintenance from entering the watercourse
- Don’t wash down in areas that drain directly to surface
waters
- Have drainage site plans in place to deal with oil spills and
absorbency kits (spill kits) kept on site to deal with minor
incidents. Ensure that your staff are aware of the procedures for
dealing with spills and that they know the locations of spill
kits.
