Apprentice FAQs
Q: How do I
become an apprentice?
A: Marine
sector Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and above. The scheme is
demanding, and many companies expect you to have at least four GCSEs at grade C
or above. These will ideally be related to STEM subjects (science, technology,
engineering and maths).
A Levels
will also give you a solid foundation and help steer you into your area of
interest. For example, you could take a physics A Level, embark on an
Apprenticeship in mechanical, electrical or hydraulic engineering, and then
focus on marine application.
General
route apprenticeships are also encouraged such as business administration,
finance, operational, marketing and pr. Many companies expect you to have at
least four GCSEs at grade C or above and an interest in the industry.
Q: How long
does an Apprenticeship take?
A: It
depends on which one you choose, but all Apprenticeships require you to
complete at least 585 hours of learning, which takes place both on and off the
job. The average marine Apprenticeship takes three to four years, but this is
only an indicator. In reality, it will depend on your scheme and your own rate
of progress. For a general apprenticeship this can last from one year to three
years.
Q: What
skills do I need?
A: You’ll
need good practical skills, good concentration levels and a ‘roll up your sleeves’
attitude. And it’s vital that you can communicate well with people around you
and show the right behaviors which are essential in the workplace.
