We are currently looking for a fully qualified and experienced Boatyard Engineering Manager.

The role of the Boatyard Engineering Manager is to Manage installation, maintenance and refit of engineering elements of multiple boat build and refit projects, which will involve planning, production & installation on time & budget, ensuring that all Quality checks and standards for this component have been met.

Specifically, this will include:

Project Initiation Phase

  • Create the Plan to align to the overall boat build plan, working with the boat build Project Manager as needed to: identify tasks: estimate durations; work breakdown structure & sequencing: agree dependencies with the Boat Build PM
  • Create Bill of Materials (Purchasing Plan) factoring in lead times, with input from team as required
  • Review requirements from the overall Boat Build PM to assess feasibility and that you have all information required. 
  • Assess if any additional design drawings are required for component elements and request from design office in reasonable timeframes
  • Resource Planning for your team
  • Request Set up or Update in job costing to ensure accurate billing if necessary
  • Establish Risks, Issues and Quality logs
  • Attend Project Initiation Meeting run by the Boat Build PM to ensure Roles & Responsibilities across all areas are clear
  • Set up daily Log to track Actions/risks/issues (this will make status reporting easier)
  • Review previous Lessons Learned log for similar components to assess if anything needs to be built into plan / process
  • Submit timesheets to ensure accurate billing of time to boat project

Build/Installation Phase

  • Daily direction of the Production team – Direction / Support / Guidance
    • Ensure team have the info they need, set clear deadlines and seek regular feedback on progress
    • Enforce Health & Safety standards within team & identification and management of risks
    • Review and approval of team timesheets
    • Nurture positivity & enthusiasm within the team to help create a culture of satisfaction and confidence in the company
  • Update Plan and monitor progress against plan, report slippage to Boat Build PM if the agreed dependency date becomes at risk
  • Monitor Purchasing Plan report from Purchasing to ensure PO’s are submitted in line with planned dates
  • Collate all data Sheets for final manuals
  • Capture Product data on the data record sheet (product used/ time/temperature/humidity etc.)
  • Regular Liaison with Boat Build PMs to manage dependencies & understand how any slippage is likely to impact overall Boat Build
  • Weekly/Fortnightly update of the Risks and Issues Log
  • Follow up on Actions recorded in your action tracker every week
  • Ensure quality Checks are carried out as per plan and update quality checklist for your component element to mark when complete
  • Report any ‘Lessons Learned’ to the boat build PM to capture in their ‘Lessons Learned’ log to benefit future jobs
  • Sign off ‘As Built’ forms for design drawings and return to Design team to ensure suite of boat drawings are current at all times


  • Review Quality Checklist to ensure all are complete and sign offs recorded
  • Check Product Data sheets and records are in place
  • Inspect and tick off all snagging to be resolved
  • Oversee Cleaning to acceptable standard
  • Do final inspection before hand over to boat build PM & record formal Sign off
  • Handover of data sheets, product record sheet & quality checklist to the overall boat build PM


  • Component is in working order and meets requirements
  • Review and sign off of quality checks
  • Delivery of Job on time,
  • Delivery of Job on Budget
  • Quality criteria met
  • All data sheets present, data record sheets in place


The place of work is normally Mylor Creek Boat Yard, Mylor Bridge, Falmouth TR11 5NS.

Please note that Cockwells are presently operating from a temporary location at Vospers, Ponsharden, Falmouth TR11 2SD until September 2018, or otherwise as may be dictated by the company. 


A competitive and negotiable hourly rate is offered dependent on experience.
