Floating Leisure Articles Legislation

Floating Leisure Articles placed on the market within the European Union are covered under the general product safety Directive, 2001/95/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council. The Directive addresses the risks associated with the product design of floating leisure articles for use in and on the water such as entanglement, buoyancy, capsizing, and other issues that could result in drowning or near-drowning accidents.

The EU Member States and the Commission identified floating leisure articles for use on or in the water as a group of products for which European standards should be drawn up,  in accordance with The General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) 2001/95/EC, which lays down an obligation for producers to place only safe products on the market.

British marine has produced a guide for those manufacturers whose products are regulated by this legislation, examples include:

Banana Boats

Superyacht Slides

Floating Activity Islands

Towing Donuts

Tenders between 1.2 and 2.5m
