The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has developed a new Approved Electric Propulsion Course (AEPC1).
Please click here for the draft MCA guidelines for review.
The course aims to equip learners with the fundamental theoretical knowledge and some practical hands-on experience. Part One is designed for all crew members, focusing on operational aspects, while Part Two will be technically orientated. Completion of Part One is a prerequisite for progressing to Part Two. Some learners may opt to attend only Part One, which emphasises safety, familiarisation, and general understanding. The course also seeks to provide basic training for all crew members and advanced technical training for engineers aspiring to careers on small vessels.
The overarching goal is to furnish learners with the requisite knowledge, understanding, and proficiency to conduct safe and effective operations on vessels utilising electric drives with battery technologies. Successful completion of both parts of the course will result in the allowance of 2 weeks additional workshop skills training to count towards the small vessel CoC as set out in section 4.5.1 and 8.5 (approval) of MSN 1904.
The MCA is asking for feedback on the guidelines by close of business on 14 October 2024. Please send your feedback to to facilitate centralised review.
British Marine would also welcome members’ views and would ask that any comments be sent to by the 7 October 2024 so we may submit a response on behalf of the industry.
