British Marine South West Drives Support for the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy
18 August 2025

The British Marine South West Association has been showing its support for a UK marine institution currently facing unprecedented challenges - The Boat Building Academy (BBA).

Their first contribution is towards the creation of the Boat Building Academy's stand entrance at the 2025 Southampton International Boat Show.

Designed to replicate an inverted boat frame, this striking entrance will welcome visitors to the Academy’s stand and form part of the Wooden Boat Stage — a brand-new feature for this year’s show. The Wooden Boat Stage is a collaboration between the Wooden Boatbuilders Trade Association and Women in Boat Building, providing a dedicated platform to celebrate the craft and culture of British wooden boatbuilding.

We are incredibly grateful for the galvanised support that Chair Sarah Wallbank and the entire board of British Marine South West are providing to the Boat Building Academy and it could not come at more vital time. In the challenging times in which we find ourselves the BBA is doing all it can to continue to deliver first class training to serve the wonderful boat building industry both in the UK and across the world which is why it is essential that funds are raised to secure the freehold on the building in Lyme Regis in order to provide future stability for the institution

Will Reed, Director & Co-Chair of Trustees BBA

The BBA is now the last remaining traditional boat building college in the UK and so it was a unanimous decision for British Marine South West to offer our support to the institution to the best of our ability in order to preserve this invaluable piece of maritime heritage. We are proud to be able to support the growth of the facilities presence at Southampton Boat Show this year and would encourage those attending to visit the stand where there is a full programme of demonstrations and talks from the combined heritage crafts exhibitors. We have other initiatives of support we are looking forward to announcing in the coming weeks and I would urge any individual or institution that would like to do the same to speak to Will and his team to discover how they can get involved
