HSE issues Safety Notice on Motion Compensated Gangway Auto-Retraction Risks
13 August 2025

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a safety alert highlighting serious risks linked to the unplanned retraction of motion compensated gangways (MCGs), commonly used in the offshore sector.

Recent incidents have shown that power failures or control system errors can cause these gangways to retract without warning, endangering personnel crossing between a vessel and an offshore installation. Known as auto-retraction, this malfunction can result in workers falling onto the gangway, being struck by moving parts, or — in severe cases — falling from height, potentially causing serious injury or death.

The HSE stresses that operators, duty holders, and vessel owners must ensure any auto-retraction feature is fitted with adequate audible and visual warnings. These should allow sufficient time for personnel to move to safety before the gangway begins retracting.

The full safety notice, Motion Compensated Gangways Auto-Retraction, is available via the HSE website.
