After many fruitful years under the governance of the Church Army, the Chaplaincy is in the process of becoming an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).
This move reflects both the growth of the ministry and the increasing demand for its work. Waterways Chaplains provide practical and pastoral support to boaters, liveaboards, and towpath communities—offering a listening ear, guiding people towards specialist help when needed, and helping to build stronger, more connected waterways communities.
Becoming a standalone CIO will give the Chaplaincy greater flexibility to develop its services and respond quickly to emerging needs within the sector. It also creates new opportunities for partnership with organisations across the marine industry.
As preparations advance, Waterways Chaplaincy is keen to connect with British Marine members who may be interested in supporting this transition, whether through expertise, resources, corporate partnerships, or simply by helping to raise awareness.
If you or your organisation would like to be part of this next stage in the Chaplaincy’s journey, they would warmly welcome a conversation. Together, we can help ensure that vital support continues along our waterways for years to come.
