New occupational water safety training courses
11 June 2025

Currently, there is a significant gap in occupational water safety training provision for individuals working in, on, or around water, including those operating aboard small vessels.

Despite the inherent risks associated with these environments, there are no standardised or widely accessible vocational courses designed to equip operators with the necessary safety skills and competencies.

In response to this need, Birmingham and Midland Marine Services Ltd have developed two Occupational Water Safety courses specifically for those working around water margins: Inland Water Safety Management and Coastal / Tidal Marina Water Safety Management on behalf of British Marine, accredited by the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue.

These courses equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to make informed safety decisions and respond effectively in an emergency, including life-saving rescue techniques. They address a critical shortfall in training and offer a robust solution for organisations seeking to safeguard their teams in aquatic environments.

The Inland Water Safety Management course is designed for individuals and organisations operating near rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs, and other inland waterways. It focuses on risk identification, site-specific safety planning, and practical emergency response techniques tailored to inland environments.

The course equips participants with the competence to assess dynamic water conditions and implement effective safety measures in both routine and high-risk situations. The Coastal / Tidal Marina Water Safety Management course is tailored for those working in and around coastal or tidal marinas, harbours, and waterfront infrastructure. It addresses the unique risks associated with tidal influence, vessel movement, confined walkways and public access.

Participants will gain the skills to manage safety in busy marine environments, respond to incidents involving water entry, and apply rescue techniques specific to marina and harbour settings.
