Rick retired only a few months earlier, in August, bringing to a close an extraordinary 25-year career with Topper Sailboats. Over those years, Rick became far more than a colleague to many across the industry. He was a trusted friend, a tireless advocate, and a familiar, reassuring presence within the sailing community both in the UK and around the world.
Working closely with Martin Fry and Rob White, Rick played a pivotal role in delivering the Topaz range of boats, helping to introduce thousands of people to the joy of sailing. His vision, determination and deep belief in accessible boating expanded opportunities for sailors of all ages and abilities, and helped shape classes that continue to thrive globally.
Rick’s impact extended well beyond product development. He consistently championed improvements to the Topper class and was instrumental in its most recent innovations. Just as importantly, he was a passionate supporter of boat shows, including the London and Southampton Boat Shows, where he was always ready to help, whether supplying boats for displays or simply offering a warm “good morning” at the start of a long show day. Rick retired just ahead of this year’s Southampton International Boat Show, but his presence and support had been felt there for many years.
Rick’s passing, so soon after his retirement, is a profound loss to the marine industry. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, generosity, and unwavering commitment to sailing and the people within it.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Rick’s wife Mandy, his daughter Emma, and all his family, friends and colleagues. Rick’s funeral took place today, 5 January 2026, and he will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered, by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
