UK Customs Regime Consultation
28 July 2026

With the international trade landscape fast evolving HMRC is wanting to assess the impact its current customs regime has on business operations, including those on SMEs, and what adaptions might need to be made in the future.

This is why it has launched a consultation that runs till midnight on 15 September and which focuses on the following three areas:

  • International trade and its impacts on commercial operations and the UK customs regime;
  • the future of customs data and how the UK customs model could better align with digitalised business operations;
  • and whether the UK’s approach to customs authorisations supports a modernised trading world.

The Government is keen to hear from businesses of all sizes and of all levels of experience importing to and exporting from the UK. If your business has concerns about the UK customs regime please consider responding directly to HMRC via its online form or via email to customsmodernisation@hmrc.gov.uk by 15th September 2026.
