Whilst this campaign is focussed on specifically helping the hospitality sector, we know the UK marine industry is closely interconnected with the wider tourism and hospitality sectors. This fact was most clearly evidenced by the cumulative £17.38bn GVA delivered by the marine industry in the 2022/23 that includes the significant spend on hospitality (including food and drink etc) by people whilst participating in boating and other watersports. Not only do we want to see the cost of doing business for British Marine members reduced but also for action to be taken to stem the squeeze on household incomes and thus help marine industry customers. The success of this specific VAT campaign could help millions of people, including for example those looking to holiday on Britain’s inland waterways or to simply enjoy the café facilities which many UK marinas provide.
The current 20% VAT rate is among the highest in Europe and lowering to more in line with the majority of Europe would not only help stimulate economic activity but also enable more UK businesses to remain competitive. It is why British Marine, together with other tourism bodies, are calling on all those connected to the tourism and hospitality sectors support this campaign.
