Ofgem consults on improving electricity network connections
6 October 2026

How satisfied are you with electricity infrastructure to support your business’ and its future growth plans?

Ofgem is currently consulting on planned regulatory requirements to improve service standards for connecting customers.   Although this consultation, Transforming the Connections Experience (TCE), is primarily aimed at electricity network companies, it also invites views from connecting companies and from trade bodies and this is why we would like to hear your views.

We know that electricity connection problems can extend beyond traditional large energy projects and may now be adversely impacting the ability of businesses within the marine industry to invest, grow and decarbonise. However, to evidence this we need to hear from businesses affected, such as:

  • those seeking a larger or upgraded electricity connection for their operations;
  • marinas and boatyards with significant electricity demand;
  • those wanting to install electric-boat charging or shore power infrastructure; or marine businesses seeking to develop renewable generation / storage;
  • and / or those having experienced significant delays, uncertainty or unexpected costs when seeking a connection.

If any of the above relates to your business, please share your experiences / case study with our External Affairs Manager, Joanna Richardson, via email jrichardson@britishmarine.gov.uk no later than Friday 23rd October.

Subject to the feedback that Joanna receives, we will respond to Ofgem and highlight the fact that marine businesses are increasingly dependent on timely access to additional electricity capacity, especially as more seek to invest in electrification.  We would welcome greater transparency, consistency and accountability in the connections process and for the marine industry’s needs to be reflected in the forthcoming reforms.
