Boatbuilders and supply chain invited to shape a new global Life Cycle Assessment framework

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), the European Boating Industry (EBI) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) have launched a global stakeholder survey as part of the Global Recreational Marine Industry Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Methodology Project.

The project is developing the first globally aligned LCA methodology for recreational boats and yachts up to 24m LOA, building on the foundations of EBI's Blue Boat Horizon (BBH) methodology and the earlier Pathways to Decarbonisation Study.

The aim is a shared framework that lets manufacturers, regulators and buyers assess and compare the environmental performance of a boat across its full lifecycle, from raw materials through to end of life, on a consistent, global basis.

The survey takes around 20 minutes to complete and is open to boatbuilders, propulsion providers and component/materials suppliers of all sizes and regions. It covers current engagement with LCA, barriers and enablers to adoption, commercial value, and awareness of relevant regulation such as the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
