British Marine Electrical Technician BMET

Overview

A two-day course based around the BMEEA Code of Practice, the industry-recommended standard. The course is designed to give candidates a general overview of the knowledge and skills required for a BMEEA-certified Marine Electrical Technician. All information and required knowledge used mainly with UK marine electric systems and follows not only the BMEEA Code of Practice and ISOs, but also the Recreational Craft Regulations (RCR).

Suitable for electrical engineers or Apprentices with at least one year’s experience, looking to further their knowledge, skills and gain a qualification in marine electrics.

     Owen Davies

         Owen has been working alongside Richard Broden-Cowell at Bournemouth and Poole College within the Marine department and was invited to join to expand the delivery team.

     He has a wealth of experience in the marine industry starting as a cadet he spent 5 years at sea before coming shoreside to work in various engineering roles before taking up his role as a    
     lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College.

     He holds a foundation degree in Marine Engineering, teaching qualification, assessors qualification as well as being an approved trainer by British Marine and NMEA .

     He has worked for companies such as Condor Ferries, Marine Scotland and OYS.

     Keith is an expert in marine electrical work due to his many years in the industry. Keith runs his own company specialising in electrical design and installation for inland waterways. His passion  
     for the inland marine industry shines through his training and has a wealth of knowledge including working with vehicles and Off-Grid installations to a level whereby he can complete all the
     tests required and sign off and issue test certificates as required by the IET. joint project between Brummagem Boats and Alvechurch Boat Centre, which included a 230-volt AC microwave. This
     was a first for inland waterways hire craft.

     Keith became a marine electrician working for various boat builders, becoming one of the first approved UK installers for Mastervolt equipment.

     Keith is a member of British Marine and a member of two Associations. He is Chairman of the Inland Boat Building Association and Vice Chairman of the BMEEA.

     Keith been an approved British Marine presenter for many years. Presenting The IBB Marine Electrical Awareness and BMET course (British Marine Electrical Technician).

 

     Richard Broden-Cowell

     Richard Broden-Cowell has a lifetime of experience within the marine electrical industry, much of it as Managing Director of Sure Power Marine, or working with companies such as Sunseeker  
     International Ltd, Discovery Yachts, Le-Purple Marine and Hamble Yacht Services, to name but a few, as well as being ETO on various superyachts. 

     Richard is a qualified and certificated marine electrical specialist who also holds a degree in teaching and qualifications in assessing. He has many years’ experience teaching the skills of boat  
     electrics and electronics, as a college lecturer. 

     Richard is an approved and certificated lecturer for British Marine, to deliver the BMET, MEI and AMEI courses.  Some of these courses are delivered from his own classroom at The Marine
     Technology Centre on Bournemouth and Poole College campus. 

Adam JamesAdam James
Adam joined British Marine in 2024 following on from a career almost exclusively in the Marine Industry.

For three years he was the Coxswain of the most northerly lifeboat in the UK before moving to lead the United Kingdom’s only full time, all weather lifeboat station based at Spurn Point in the River Humber.

Adam originally studied Naval Architecture for small craft and then went on to forge a career as a professional sailor. He has worked building racing yachts and motor boats for companies on the South Coast including the Paralympic Sonar Class.

Adams role in the technical team can vary from giving support and guidance to members to sitting on technical committees. His background in small craft design and construction gives him a direct insight into our member’s needs.
