In an increasingly competitive market, professional credibility matters more than ever. Whether clients are buying or selling, they want reassurance that the broker managing their transaction has the knowledge, professionalism and expertise to deliver a smooth, compliant and successful sale.

The gold standard in boat brokerage

The Certified Professional Boat Broker (CPBB) qualification has been developed to recognise brokers who demonstrate exactly that.

Created by two of the UK’s most respected industry associations, British Marine’s Boat Retailers & Brokers Association (BRBA) in partnership with the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA) and leading professionals from across the industry, CPBB provides brokers with a recognised professional standard and sets the benchmark for excellence in yacht brokerage.

For brokers looking to strengthen their expertise, build their professional reputation, and stand out in the marketplace, becoming a Certified Professional Boat Broker provides a clear competitive advantage – demonstrating to clients and colleagues alike that you operate to the highest standards of knowledge, professionalism and integrity.

Why become a Certified Professional Boat Broker?

 1.     Professional recognition and competitive advantage
The CPBB qualification recognises brokers who meet the highest professional standards in boat brokerage. In a competitive market, certification helps you stand out and demonstrates to clients that you operate with expertise, integrity and professionalism (view client-facing page). CPBB brokers also receive a promotional toolkit to help market their certification and further enhance their visibility.

2.     Increased visibility and client enquiries

Certified Professional Boat Brokers are listed in a public-facing directory and promoted by both British Marine’s Boat Retailers & Brokers Association and the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (view client-facing page). This helps potential buyers and sellers identify trusted professionals, generating valuable new business enquiries.

3.     Stronger client confidence

Buyers and sellers increasingly expect transparency and professionalism. Certification gives clients reassurance that they are working with a broker who understands the legal, financial and regulatory responsibilities involved in vessel transactions.

4.     Enhanced brokerage and sales skills

The CPBB pathway develops both technical knowledge and practical brokerage skills, helping brokers market vessels effectively, manage negotiations and deliver successful sales.

5.     Ongoing professional development

Once qualified, brokers maintain their certification through Continuous Professional Development (CPD), ensuring their knowledge stays current with evolving regulations, compliance requirements and industry best practice.

6.     Industry support and professional network

Certified brokers are members of British Marine’s Boat Retailers & Brokers Association and/or the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents. This provides access to further industry guidance, regulatory updates, professional support and valuable networking opportunities across the marine sector.

7.     Exclusive partner benefits (COMING SOON)

CPBB brokers will soon benefit from preferential rates and services from selected industry partners, including legal and insurance providers - delivering additional value and support for your brokerage business.

Your pathway to becoming a Certified Professional Boat Broker

Becoming CPBB-qualified is a structured process designed to develop both technical expertise and real-world brokerage skills.

The first stage is the Practical Yacht Broker Course, a two-day training programme that focuses on the real-world realities of boat brokerage

The course provides essential knowledge across key legal, financial and operational areas including:

  • Marine Law
  • VAT considerations
  • Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance
  • Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements
  • Recreational Craft Regulations (RCR)

Delegates gain a clear understanding of the documentation and processes required to transfer good legal title when brokering a vessel, helping to reduce risk for both brokers and their clients.

Alongside compliance and technical knowledge, the course also develops the practical skills required to successfully sell boats and manage brokerage transactions, including:

  • Negotiation techniques
  • Conflict management
  • Digital marketing strategies that support lead generation and boat sales
  • Selling new, used and part-exchange vessels
  • Financing options for buyers
  • The role of the Marine Surveyor
  • MCA coding requirements
  • Considerations when selling commercial vessels

At the end of the course, delegates will sit the Practical Yacht Broker examination. Successful candidates are awarded a certificate of attendance.

Once Trainee Yacht Broker status has been achieved, candidates can progress to the Certified Professional Boat Broker qualification (CPBB).

This stage typically takes 12–18 months and involves further professional development and assessment designed to deepen both brokerage knowledge and professional practice.

Candidates will:

  • Compile and submit a professional portfolio for review
  • Complete five in depth online training webinars, which cover the Recreational Craft Directive (RCR), Know Your Customer (KYC), VAT, brokerage law and digital marketing.

These sessions ensure brokers understand both the regulatory framework surrounding vessel sales and the practical strategies needed to market and sell boats effectively.

The qualification is then awarded following successful completion of the final CPBB Assessment Examination.

Before sitting the final assessment, candidates must hold an active membership with ABYA and/or the BRBA.

If you are already an experienced yacht broker and meet the programme criteria, you may be eligible for our Fast Track route to certification.

This pathway recognises existing industry expertise and allows experienced brokers to progress more quickly through the certification process while still demonstrating the professional knowledge and standards required for CPBB status.

Eligibility will be assessed based on your experience and professional background. To find out more, please complete the following form.

Becoming a Certified Professional Boat Broker marks the beginning of your continued professional growth and development.

To maintain certification, brokers must complete annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training (Link to further details). This ensures brokers remain up to date with evolving legislation, compliance requirements, and industry best practice - maintaining the high professional standards expected of CPBB-certified brokers.

“Completing the Certified Professional Boat Broker course has been a genuinely transformative experience. The programme not only strengthened my knowledge across the legal, regulatory and commercial aspects of brokerage, but also gave me the confidence to deliver a higher standard of service to clients. From a business perspective, the certification has added real credibility and trust, helping us stand out in a competitive market and reinforcing our commitment to professionalism and best practice.”
