The British Marine Lock Keeper of the Year Award, which has been running for almost 30 years, celebrates the outstanding voluntary work carried out by lock keepers across the UK. Each year, British Marine members submit nominations, highlighting individuals who consistently go above and beyond to support boating businesses, waterway users and local communities.
Adrian was nominated by British Marine member Heather Hewitt of Union Canal Carriers and was announced as the winner at the Inland Conference 2025 in November.
In her nomination, Heather highlighted Adrian’s exceptional support during a particularly challenging period last summer. Adrian ensured Union Canal Carriers were kept fully informed of stoppages and water level changes and went a step further by arranging for Canal & River Trust volunteers to assist with moving ten boats between Braunston and Hillmorton and back again. This support was instrumental in enabling the business to continue trading.
Since moving to Braunston in 2019, Adrian has become a familiar and highly respected figure on the local canal network. He volunteers extensively for the Canal & River Trust as an asset assessor, reservoir watch person and work boat steerer, and also serves the community as a parish councillor. Known for his positivity and approachability, Adrian is always ready to help boaters, towpath users and canal‑side businesses alike, come rain or shine.
The British Marine Lock Keeper of the Year Award exists to recognise individuals whose long‑standing voluntary commitment plays a vital role in keeping inland waterways operational, accessible and welcoming. Adrian’s dedication makes him a truly deserving recipient of this long‑established award.
