British Marine has revealed the nominees shortlisted for the 2026 Apprentice of the Year Award, celebrating the next generation of talent helping to shape the future of the UK marine industry.

Now in its third year, the prestigious award recognises apprentices who have demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, innovation and impact within their workplace and across the wider sector.

“The quality of nominations we’ve received this year has been very impressive and highlights the depth of talent coming through the marine industry. Each nominee has shown real dedication, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, while also making a positive impact within their workplace and wider team.

The 2026 nominees represent a wide range of disciplines across the marine industry, from boatbuilding and engineering to marina operations and maritime studies.

Meet the nominees

Abigail Whitwell – Carpentry Apprentice, Kit Parts, Princess Yachts
 

Abigail has impressed colleagues with her rapid progression, positive attitude and ability to take on feedback and apply it immediately in her work. Operating within the fast-paced kit parts environment, she has significantly improved her efficiency while maintaining consistently high-quality workmanship. Abigail has also been praised for boosting team morale and mentoring fellow apprentices entering the business.

Jack Hayden – Marina & Boatyard Operative Apprentice, Fambridge Yacht Haven
 

Jack has been recognised for his versatility and professionalism since joining Fambridge Yacht Haven. From boat handling and repairs to customer service and health and safety responsibilities, Jack has embraced every aspect of marina operations. His reliability, positive attitude and consistent performance have made him a highly valued member of the team.

Alfie Daley – Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice, Fairline Yachts

Described by colleagues as “exceptional” and “fantastic,” Alfie has quickly earned a strong reputation across the business during his first six months as an apprentice. His enthusiasm, willingness to learn and hardworking attitude have stood out throughout every department he has worked in, making him a valued and respected member of the Fairline team.

Jordan Matthews-Coles – Carpenter Apprentice, Princess Yachts

Jordan has demonstrated adaptability and resilience throughout his apprenticeship, taking on work across multiple areas of the boatbuilding process. Despite production challenges and changing workflows, he has shown a willingness to learn new skills, collaborate with colleagues and ensure projects remain on track. His positivity and eagerness to ask questions have also made him a popular team member.

Matthew Kipping – Apprentice Cadet, Warsash Maritime School

Nominated by Warsash Maritime School, Matthew has shown exceptional commitment both academically and professionally. Alongside his studies and workplace responsibilities with Trinity House Hill Robinson, he has played an active role in the Warsash Maritime Society leadership group and contributed to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) audit cadet panel. Judges praised his professionalism, leadership and dedication to the maritime industry.

Niamh Taylor-May – Marine Engineer Apprentice, Princess Yachts

Niamh has been recognised for her proactive approach and determination throughout her apprenticeship. Working on the Y72 line, she has developed her skills across multiple engineering tasks and become part of the company’s power-up and test team, helping diagnose and resolve technical faults. Despite balancing long hours alongside additional support needs linked to dyslexia, Niamh has demonstrated resilience, confidence and a strong commitment to learning.

The nominations are currently being reviewed by the judging panel, which is made up of industry professionals, including:

• Manj Mahey -  Head of Training, British Marine
• Jasmine Kundra – Former contestant on the BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’
• Lorna Wagner – Operations Director, Maritime UK Solent
• Samantha Mitchell - Director, SM Employment and Skills Consultants
• Anisha Roberts – Williams Jet Tenders – Winner of inaugural Apprentice of the year award 2024
   

From the nominees, three finalists will be announced in June and the overall winner revealed during the Apprentice Recognition Ceremony at the Southampton International Boat Show 2026 on Tuesday 22 September 2026, VOCO hotel, Southampton.

Celebrating future industry leaders

Alongside the Apprentice of the Year Award, the Apprentice Recognition Ceremony, forms part of British Marine’s ongoing commitment to supporting skills development and careers across the marine sector.

From boatbuilders to business administrators, engineers to events assistants, apprentices across all marine pathways will be recognised for their hard work and achievements.

More than 70 apprentices from leading companies across the sector will be presented with their certificates in front of peers, industry leaders and special guests.

This ceremony highlights not only the progress of individuals, but the commitment of the marine sector to supporting skills, training and careers.
