The River Exe Café is a custom-built floating barge restaurant located in the Exe estuary and can only be reached by boat. To increase customer visits beyond boat owners, the café operates two water taxis from Exmouth Marina. When faced with extensive new licensing regulations regarding the two water taxis in 2020, Paul Craven of The River Exe Café turned to British Marine’s technical team for support and confirmation of which aspects of the new regulations applied to his business.
The River Exe Café is a staple for locals and popular with visitors to the area. Operating the water taxis is vital for the business to maintain customer footfall, so – understandably – Paul was extremely worried when he first approached the British Marine consultancy team.
British Marine’s technical team reviewed the proposed licensing regulations and were able to give Paul the guidance and support required in confirming which rules applied to his business. The comprehensive consultancy service allowed Paul to have an informed discussion with his local harbour authority. Paul was then able to work with the local harbour authority and the appropriate rules were implemented for his two water taxis. By implementing only the regulations that applied, the expertise from British Marine’s technical team saved the business over £23,000.

Saved In Regulatory Costs
Without British Marine membership, I would not have had the help from leading experts in their technical team. Not only did I have the support that I required, but British Marine’s consultancy service also saved the business over £23,000 in costs of implementing regulations that were not applicable and has helped me to improve the relationship with my local harbour authority.
