International Maritime Organisation

The Internation Maritime Organisation (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating maritime transport, the IMO's primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping. IMO regulations become national law through a process where member states agree to adopt and implement IMO conventions into their own domestic legislation. The IMO develops regulations, but it's the responsibility of each government to translate those regulations into enforceable laws within their own jurisdiction.
