The Lecturer in Marine Engineering Role:

As our Lecturer in Marine Engineering, you will deliver high quality and effective teaching and learning in Marine Engineering subject areas to Bournemouth and Poole College students.

Responsibilities as our Lecturer in Marine Engineering will include:

·        Teach on courses as agreed with the Learning Manager across the Marine department using a variety of mediums such as Hydraulics and Mechanical Engineering techniques to reflect the needs of the department and your area of expertise.

·        Contribute to the design, delivery and future planning and development of the curriculum

·        Pay due attention to the principles of inclusive learning including:

·        individual learning styles.

·        support for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.

·        extension resources/activities for students of higher ability.

·        general resources, including the use of Information Learning Technology.

·        Organise and participate in relevant visits, enrichment visits, ship visits, and liaise with external organisations to enhance the learner experience.

·        Create an outstanding student experience which leads to progression or employment

·        Prepare and mark student work, monitor progress towards individual targets, keep records and provide timely reports/reviews to students, parents, employers, and College managers, as appropriate.

·        Take appropriate responsibility to ensure the health and safety of self and others

·        Develop and maintain effective external links related to the delivery of the subject/course and represent the College at relevant meetings internal and external.

·        Contribute to the teaching/learning resource bank for the relevant subject/course   

·        Internal verification

·        Act as a Personal Tutor to students, full time students/apprentices   

·        Representing the College at internal and external events and meetings including student recruitment and admissions events

 

As our Lecturer in Marine Engineering, you’ll ideally have:

 

·        Level 2 (or equivalent) English and Maths

·        Teaching Qualification or willingness to achieve within 2 years.

·        Marine based qualification at L3 or above

·        3 years’ experience in Marine Engineering environment or suitable related industry

·        Current evidence-based practice in field of expertise

·        Working knowledge of Marine Engineering and Electrical Systems

·        Competent in Microsoft Office applications

·        Communication skills including written and verbal

·        Welding Experience

·        Machining experience

Department Overview

 

Automotive and Marine are part of Engineering and based at the Poole campus with Boatbuilding and Composites at our Fulcrum site. The facilities include separate, well-equipped workshops for each area to give the students a realistic approach to the workplace. There are also designated classrooms with visual aids to facilitate teaching and learning.

The area has a very successful employer engagement record with well attended employer forums.

We offer programs for young people, apprenticeships, adult education and full cost courses.

 

Purpose of the Role

 

We currently have two lecturer vacancies within our Engineering provision and are seeking industry professionals from either Marine Engineering or Automotive (Light or Heavy Vehicle) backgrounds.

The purpose of the role is to deliver high quality teaching, learning and assessment, supporting students to develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required for careers in the marine and automotive industries.

 

Key Accountabilities & Duties

 

1. Deliver High-Quality Teaching and Learning

Support the delivery of engaging learning experiences that help students develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for successful careers in the Marine industry.

 

Responsibilities include:

·  Planning and delivering sessions including classroom teaching, workshop learning, and tutorials.

·  Contributing to student-centred learning that supports a range of learning styles and abilities.

·  Preparing learning materials and supporting the assessment of student work, providing constructive feedback that encourages development and progression.

·  Acting as a Personal Tutor where required, supporting students with academic progress, wellbeing and career aspirations.

·  Helping students understand course expectations, assessment requirements and progression routes.

·  Supporting students with the planning of industry work placements that provide valuable real-world experience.

·  Contributing to a safe, organised and inspiring learning environment that reflects professional industry standards.

·  Working collaboratively with colleagues to share knowledge, develop teaching practice and enhance the student experience.

 

Industry professionals who are new to teaching will be supported to translate their sector expertise into effective learning activities and classroom practice.

 

2. Support Course Development and Programme Delivery

Contribute to the successful delivery and continuous improvement of Marine courses by:

·  Supporting the development and delivery of course structures and learning plans.

·  Assisting with the preparation and updating of course materials.

·  Participating in team meetings and contributing ideas to improve the programme.

·  Supporting course reviews and improvement planning activities.

·  Ensuring assessments meet awarding body requirements and College quality standards.

·  Supporting communication with students, and parents/carers regarding progress and outcomes.

·  Working alongside teaching, technical and support staff to deliver high-quality programmes.

 

Staff new to teaching will be mentored and guided through these processes as part of their development.

 

3. Contribute to Curriculum Development and Quality

Work with colleagues and managers to ensure programmes remain relevant, high quality and aligned with industry needs.

·  Support the planning and review of curriculum delivery in line with college policies and sector developments.

·  Maintain records relating to student attendance, progress and assessment outcomes.

·  Contribute to programme evaluation, self-assessment and quality improvement activities.

 

4. Engage with Employers and the Wider Community

Help strengthen links between the College, employers and the community by:

·  Supporting relationships with employers and industry partners as agreed with your line Manager.

·  Participating in school liaison activities, open events and recruitment activities.

·  Contributing to the promotion of the programme and showcasing student achievements.

 

5. Develop Professional Expertise

Maintain and develop professional skills both in teaching practice and industry knowledge.

·  Undertake professional development to enhance teaching skills and maintain current industry expertise.

·  Work towards a recognised teaching qualification if not already held, with full support from the College.

·  Participate in appraisal, professional development planning and teaching observation programmes.

·  Contribute to College working groups or committees where appropriate.
