Job Title: Managing Director
Reports To: Chairman & Board of Directors
Position/Hours: Permanent, 40 hours per week, although flexible approach is required which may include occasional weekend working
Location: Mayflower Marina, Richmond Walk, Plymouth, PL1 4LS
Salary: From £65,000, subject to prior experience Benefits 33 days’ holiday (including public holidays), 6% company pension employer contribution, Life assurance 2 x annual salary, Private medical scheme (including dental & optical)
The Managing Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational management of Mayflower Marina thus ensuring the marina operates efficiently, safely, and profitably while delivering exceptional service to berth holders and visitors.
Residential and visiting customers, all employees, Chair and Board of Directors, all external stakeholders.
Strategic Leadership
• Develop and implement the company’s strategic plan in alignment with Board directives
• Identify growth opportunities, including marina development, and adoption of innovation
• Monitor industry trends and adapt business strategies accordingly
• To develop and manage capital improvement project
• To enhance the marina’s reputation and long-term sustainability
• To strive to maintain Mayflower Marina’s 5 Gold Anchor status and Clean Marina accreditation
Operational Management
• Oversee day-to-day marina operations
• To regularly meet with staff members to communicate on operational and safety matters
• To implement policies, procedures and undertake periodic reviews to ensure compliance with statutory health & safety and environmental regulations
• To oversee staff training to meet statutory and operational requirements
• To adopt and implement marina industry best practice
• To manage and maintain marina assets, plant & equipment, and infrastructure
Financial Oversight
• To oversee the preparation and management of monthly P&L accounts, annual budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.
• Monitor financial performance and implement cost control measures
• Drive revenue growth through berth occupancy, hoist and boatyard services, fuel sales, and ancillary services
Team Leadership
• Recruit, train, and manage marina staff, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability
• To oversee staff training to meet statutory and operational requirements
• Promote staff development and succession planning
• Set performance objectives and conduct evaluations
• To make annual staff salary review recommendations and implement subject to Board approval
Customer & Stakeholder Relations
• To strive to maintain ‘the Mayflower family’ atmosphere that exists between marina staff and berth holders
• Maintain strong relationships with Plymouth City Council, the King’s Harbour Master, The Duchy of Cornwall, the Marine Management Organisation, Princess Yachts, suppliers, and community groups
• To garner customer feedback and resolve any complaints promptly and professionally
• Represent the marina at industry events, conferences, and public forums
Marketing & Business Development
• Oversee marketing strategies to attract new customers and enhance brand visibility
• Develop and promote events, seasonal campaigns, and loyalty programs
• Leverage digital platforms and partnerships to provide information and increase engagement
• To employ outside professional agencies to assist from time to time
Person Specification Qualifications, Training, Knowledge and Skills:
• Proven experience in senior management, preferably within the marina or maritime sector
• Strong understanding of marina operations and maritime regulations
• Experience in the maintenance of marine installations and shoreside infrastructure
• Financial acumen with experience in budgeting and P&L management
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to problem-solving
• Demonstrable commitment to customer service Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills
• Certified Marina Manager
• VHF Licences
• RYA or equivalent marine boat handling qualifications.
• Experience with marina management software
• Marine engineering experience
• Qualifications in the management of Health & Safety
• Knowledge of environmental sustainability practices in marine settings
